Understanding and appreciating the symptoms of Gilbert's Syndrome

Story

Dear Friends,

The aim of this fundraising page is to obtain a better understanding of the symptoms associated with a liver condition called Gilbert's Syndrome (GS). This syndrome is highly prevalent in the general population (about 5-10% of the public have GS!), however, some of these individuals experience debilitating symptoms including severe fatigue, nausea, an irritible bowel, depression and other neurological symptoms (confusion, poor short term memory etc). The symptoms reported vary considerably from individual to individual, creating confusion as to whether GS alone or in combination with an underlying condition might be causing these symtoms, which severely affect individuals' capacity to engage in work, maintain healthy friendships and family relationships. These individuals often feel helpless, because GS is currently considered a benign condition (not life-threatening) and therefore, is generally not treated by doctors, leaving affected persons hopeless and without treatment. The aim of this fundraising event is to 1) first document the percentage of GS individuals that exhibit symptoms and 2) to determine which symptoms are reported in symptomatic individuals. Funding will be directed to the Australian Liver Foundation, who will distribute the funding to adequately qualified researchers and clinicians to answer these important questions and disseminate their results widely, in the form of scientific conferences and facebook messages within GS forums. Any donation (however big or small) would be incredibly appreciated.

Kindest Regards,
Andrew C. Bulmer, PhD (Gilbert's Syndrome Researcher)

    The Liver Foundation

    Your fundraising saves lives.

The Liver Foundation exists to address the spectrum of liver disease from very mild disease in the community, right through to advanced liver disease. This is people requiring liver transplantation and people with severe complications of liver disease, including liver cancer.

Liver cancer is the fastest growing cause of cancer in Australia and it has a devastatingly low survival rate. Only 1 in 5 people diagnosed with liver cancer in Australia survive more than 5 years. This is a devastating outcome and one we are committed to changing.

Currently 1 in 3 Australians have some form of liver disease, and most of them don't know it. There is a great deal that can be done to reverse, treat and even cure liver diseases - but the first step is awareness.

When you fundraise for us you also help to spread the word about liver disease. Thank you.
