Story
Message in English followed by Spanish.
Mensaje en ingles seguido del castellano.
For the past five and a half years I have lived in Arequipa, Peru, and supported 'Elohim', an independent school in the slums on the outskirts of the city.
This year, 230 small people began classes in Kindy and Primary at ‘Elohim’, where teachers will work to educate them both academically and socially, and encourage them with expertise, love - and a daily serving of lunch!
This haven of hope provides a refuge from ‘home’, which for most pupils is a stone shack with dirt floor, no running water and no sanitation. Many live with single parents, and abusive step-parents are distressingly common. Whether because of the work commitments, or the alcoholism of their carers, vulnerable children are often left to their own devices from early in the morning until late in the evening.
I have just completed walking the 'Camino Frances', in aid of 'Elohim', its students and its teachers. I walked 875 kilometres in 37 days in the footsteps of Santiago, following the 'Compostela' or 'Way of the Stars' across the north of Spain.
I do hope you will be able to support my physical effort by making a donation on this page for 'Elohim'. It would be just grest to meet my goal of $10,000 by the time the page expires on July 17th.
Please, please, if you are considering making a donation, don’t put this aside. It will be wonderful if you can act now, for the sake of these precious children enduring the brutal life of the slums, to improve their education, and give them hope.
'Un abrazo fuerte del Peru',
Susi Prescott

Susi Prescott

Hope Through Education, Arequipa, Peru (Global Development Group - J728N)
‘Hope through Education Arequipa, Peru’ is a Global Development Group (GDG) approved aid and development project J728N in project partnership with 'Asociacion Vida y Esperanza' which runs ‘Elohim’, an independent primary school situated in the desert squatter settlements surrounding the Andean city of Arequipa.
'Elohim' seeks to provide hope through education and a refuge for the children of this forsaken area, where adult illiteracy is the norm, rampant alcoholism dulls the pain of disillusionment, and serious domestic abuse and abandonment abound.
‘Elohim’ receives no financial backing from the Peruvian government. To continue paying teacher salaries and improving conditions for the rapidly-growing student population, the school has embarked on a project with GDG aimed at developing income-generating activities.
I have been living in Peru, and supporting 'Elohim', for five and a half years.
