Please help Greyhound Rescue save more dogs

Janet and Peter Flann set up Greyhound Rescue back in 2006. After raising their family and retiring, they found themselves fostering a few greyhounds. They soon realised that due to the sheer number of dogs they were saving, they would need to find kennels to accommodate their rescues. Janet and Peter then had to re-mortgage their own home to be able to rescue 34 greyhounds that were abandoned following a cruelty case.

Since then, Greyhound Rescue has found homes for over 500 greyhounds. They have rescued dogs that were deemed too slow to race, dogs that were no longer wanted after their racing careers had ended, as well as injured dogs and many puppies. They rehomed a litter of puppies that were unregistered, and therefore deemed useless. They were to be drowned in a bucket but thankfully, a kind soul made one phone call to save their lives.

Another save was Millie, who had her paw traumatically amputated and left to heal on its own when she was less than 11 weeks old. They were never told why, but the vet confirmed that she would have been in tremendous pain. Millie now wears a prosthetic leg to get around on four legs, like all greyhound puppies should be able to.

Janet and Peter are now in their mid-seventies and still take a very active role in rehoming greyhounds, visiting kennels and manning stalls at numerous events. There is a great team of volunteers who help with administration and kennel volunteering. They have grown from the few out of Janet and Peter’s own home to about 70 greyhounds, most in kennels as there are never enough fosters out there!

Greyhounds are by nature very gentle and affectionate. They don’t need a lot of exercise, don’t lose much hair, don’t have that ‘doggy smell’, rarely bark and make excellent family pets. Their dogs up for foster and adoption are found here: http://greyhoundrescue.com.au/category/dogs-available/

Greyhound Rescue has full charity status, does not receive any official funding and relies solely on donations, which are tax deductible. Funds raised help pay for the initial costs involved in desexing, vaccinating,microchipping, heartworm testing and the long term costs to keep them fed and sheltered until they find a home.
