Story

Hi everyone, thanks for logging on to the New Hope Cambodia Fundraising Page to show your support.

Please sponsor Rob in the half marathon in Sydney on May 19th to raise money for the following:

I am currently in Cambodia volunteering with this NGO (non-government organisation) for 5 months in their Community Outreach Department.  We work directly with poverty stricken families, offering immediate crisis care to those without shelter and/or food, and find sponsors when a longer term ‘hand up’ is needed.  We currently have over 270 sponsored families.

New Hope, with the assistance of sponsors and volunteers, treats up to one hundred residents each day for burns, wounds, salmonella poisoning, infections and illnesses such as malnutrition, HIV, hepatitis, typhoid, tuberculosis and dengue fever.

Each month, families in need receive food packages and New Hope provides free education to over 800 hundred children and young adults. New Hope also plays an active role in the fight against human and sex trafficking.

With the rainy season imminent there is an immediate need for housing and housing repairs for those who are living in poverty.  Lives are lost during the rainy season when the river swells its banks and floods the nearby shacks, and illnesses like dengue fever, malaria and tuberculosis increase tenfold. Some families either don’t have any housing and are living under tarps or in the temporary shelter of Pagodas (monk temples), or their houses are in such poor condition the rooves leak and the walls are either missing or made from any scrap material they can find.

My partner Rob Pointon and I would like to raise funds for a Housing Repair Project to help New Hope assist as many families as possible to repair their homes, or find weatherproof shelter for those living without homes before the rainy season begins.

Rob has bravely put up his hand to run a half marathon in Sydney on May 19th (21 klms and his idea of hell) to raise money to do this.

Please support this very worthwhile and life saving project.  Help Rob get over the finish line by digging deep and giving generously to help as many families as possible.

Photos cannot convey the desperate conditions that are a daily existence here for the majority of the Khmer people in Mondul 3 Village, but I have seen first hand the wonderful work that New Hope does and continues to do with the help of kind hearted donors, and the relief it brings to those on the receiving end.

Despite all the hardship and heartache these gentle people endure on a daily basis, the Khmer people remain resilient and keep smiling their beautiful smiles in the face of adversity. They have great personal dignity making it difficult for them to ask for help.

With your financial assistance we can make things a little easier for these people whose basic needs are so great, but who ask for so little.

Please help us to help them. All donations, big or small, will all make an enormous difference and every cent will go directly to the Housing Repair Project for the people in need.
