World Refugee Day

Story

Hello citizens of the world,

I have lived in Darwin for almost 2 years now. I have met people from around the world and feel honoured to have been working for Melaleuca Refugee Centre for almost 5 months now. This job tells me more about the world every day and the list of learning opportunities is endless. The most empowering experience is how every little project/idea/event grows and unfolds through the helping hands and collaboration of the wider community!

Through this page I am fundraising for the World Refugee Day festival in Darwin organised by Melaleuca Refugee Centre. It will be celebrated in Darwin on the 17th of June 2014. In order to make this event just as successful and unique as past events Melaleuca relies on donations. Please click "donate now" to help us celebrate the contributions the refugee community makes in Australian society, to promote respect towards the refugee population and to draw attention towards refugee issues! Every little donation will make a difference and even if you just share this page it might help to make other people aware!

"All good work is done the way ants do things, little by little"

Thank you in advance for your support!

Melaleuca Refugee Centre: Torture and Trauma Survivors Service of the NT

Who we are
Melaleuca Refugee Centre is a community–controlled, not–for–profit association operating out of Darwin. The association was first established in 1996 to cater for refugees and asylum seekers wanting to settle in the Northern Territory. In 2002 it expanded and now provides an environment for resettlement and healing of refugee survivors of torture and trauma, their families and community through confidential, high-quality and holistic services.

What we are seeking support for
Every year Melaleuca, in conjunction with the Refugee Council of Australia organises a World Refugee Day Festival for World Refugee Week. This year the event will be held on the 14th of June. The event aims to highlight the importance of refugee issues and celebrate the resilience, talents and achievements of people with refugee background in the Northern Territory.

Why this is important
World Refugee Day is a chance to draw attention to refugee issues, to promote respect towards the refugee population, and most of all to celebrate the many amazing contributions that the refugee community make to Australian society. World Refugee Day showcases and celebrates some of these contributions, through incredible performances, inspiring workshops, crafts, food and a multicultural soccer competition. The event is a key activity in building relationships between people form refugee background and the broader community and promoting respect and understanding.

Why we need your help
Each year the event relies on external funds to make the day a success. These funds go toward paying performers, running workshops, coordinating food and stalls, equipment, promotion and marketing. Through GoFundraise we hope to raise $15,000. We would be grateful for any contribution large or small to go toward making this important event a success.

All donations made over $2 are tax deductable.
