Improving access to CAH Medicines for children in Africa in 2023
Improving access to CAH Medicines for children in Africa in 2023
Story
Would you like to help make a difference in the lives of children living with CAH in Africa?
In late 2022, CLAN (Caring & Living As Neighbours - www.clanchildhealth.org) was asked by doctors in Africa to support children living with CAH (Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia) to access hydrocortisone and fludrortisone tablets.
Everyday challenges accessing medicines in Africa place enormous strain on families and immediate plans are underway with ASPAE (the African Society of Paediatric & Adolescent Endocrinology) to support children in Cameroon and Tanzania.
The cost of treating a child with CAH is not expensive. Manufacture of quality medicines by a partner organisation in Pakistan means CLAN is able to help doctors and families in Africa purchase a year's supply of hydrocortisone and fludrocortisone tablets for one child for less than USD$50 - that's less than $1USD per week to keep a child alive!
In 2023 CLAN is working with doctors, families and the broader @MATES4Kids movement (https://www.clanchildhealth.org/mates4kids.html) to establish sustainable supply chains to CAH medicines in resource poor settings. Successful donation of medicines to Zimbabwe (https://www.clanchildhealth.org/cah-awareness-month-2022.html) in 2022 has already had a huge impact for good (see photo above!), and encouraged us that long-term, sustainable change is possible. Likewise, funds recently raised to support children living with CAH in Sri Lanka are also now being used to purchase hydrocortisone and fludrocortisone tablets.
When we all work together, change is possible!
Please consider donating to our efforts for the CAH Communities of Africa.
Sincerely yours,
The CLAN Team,
Sydney, Australia
CLAN (Caring & Living As Neighbours)
CLAN (Caring & Living As Neighbours) is a not-for-profit, Non Government Organisation, established in Australia in 2004. Our vision is to maximise quality of life for children living with chronic health conditions in resource-poor countries of the world. These children suffer significant, preventable and inequitable morbidity, mortality and disability, and CLAN believes this situation is at odds with the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of the Child. CLAN is currently working to help children who are living with Diabetes, Autism, Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH), Nephrotic Syndrome (NS), Duchenne Muscular Dystropy (DMD) and Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) amongst others, and we collaborate with partners in Vietnam, Indonesia, Pakistan and the Philippines.
