Story

Hi there!

I'm making a difference and shredding the dreads, for a cause that's close to my heart.

As many of you would know, my dreads have been a big part of me for some 22 plus years, they could tell plenty of stories and hold a lot of history.

On the 22nd of December 2018 they will be  gone and if you would like a piece of them, get on board and donate!

My story well where do I begin; I guess I start with the beginning,

When I first met my now wife’s dad back in 1998 my hair was well and truly on it’s way to being a good head of dreads and will always remember him saying he's a nice bloke but that hair!!

In 2002 when we married he had just come out of hospital the morning of our wedding, where he had been hospitalised due to seizures, we now know the seizures he was having were caused from a brain tumour. That October he passed away from Brain cancer. Several years later we were faced with the same diagnosis all over again when I lost my father also to brain cancer.

To lose one of them to this horrible disease was pretty tragic, but to re-live it all over again was deja vu and almost unheard of, both our father’s passing from the same thing what were the chances?

Jump forward a few years and by chance my eldest son was playing footy on the same team,as another boy whose family had been faced with the heartache of brain cancer this time in their daughter and sister.

It was childhood cancer awareness month and they shared with us and all the boys their story. It really hit a spot with me and my family. To lose a parent was one thing, but the idea and possibility of losing a child to such a disease was next level, the pain, the suffering, the impact on a family, something I could never imagine. After her inspiring story my wife and I walked out of those change rooms with tears in our eyes and I said that day that if I were to ever cut my hair it would be for a reason and that after listening to this families story I had found my reason! Proud as punch the boys ran out onto the field wearing yellow arm bands that day raising awareness! I couldn't tell you if they won or lost but I know that day something felt right.

Which brings us to where we are now, the right time to cut them off, raise awareness and fingers crossed some money to go towards much needed research!

I’d appreciate any contribution, big or small.

Donations made through this platform are secure and will be remitted directly through to my charity of choice.

The Pirate Ship Foundation Ltd

The Pirate Ship Foundation is a bold and passionate community that funds vital research into childhood brain cancer through a range of initiatives, adventures, events and partnerships.

Childhood brain cancer kills more Australian children than any other disease.

The identification of improved treatment options for children with brain cancer is our primary objective, ultimately leading to a cure.

We believe it is important for our community to understand the impacts of a brain cancer diagnosis to a child and their family.  Even in the best possible cases, treatments are so damaging to a developing brain that they leave shocking, irreversible and life long-side effects.

We know that together we can support research that will deliver better outcomes and make a significant difference to those children and their families.

Funds are invested directly into childhood brain cancer research programs, including to the Brain Tumour Research Program at Telethon Kids Institute in Perth.
