The Long Walk
ABOUT
The Long Walk Trust is a charity inspired by AFL champion Michael Long which raises awareness to improve and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, wellbeing and life opportunities. When Michael Long and others walked to Canberra in 2004 to ask the Prime Minister to put the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people back on the national agenda, he captured the hearts and minds of thousands of ordinary Australians.
Your donation will go towards The Long Walk's education program; Walk The Talk. This program is aligned with the National Australian Curriculum and reached over 15,000 students in 2014. The Long Walk employs Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander facilitators to deliver the program nationally.
Our programs and activities address proven determinants of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander wellbeing by:
- Breaking down ignorance and subsequent racism and encouraging social cohesion
- Encouraging cultural resilience
- Celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and success
Each year, The Long Walk holds a number of awareness raising events around Australia. The Long Walk Community event in late May coincides with Reconciliation week and the AFL's Indigenous Round during Dreamtime week. Community stalls, family activities and a free wellbeing concert are held at Federation Square Melbourne. The Long Walk to Dreamtime at the 'G, led by Michael Long, goes from Federations Square to the MCG prior to the traditional Dreamtime game between Essendon and Richmond Football Clubs. Over 100,000 people have walked since The Long Walk inception 11 years ago. Similar events have also been held in Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide, Darwin and Alice Springs.
The Long Walk Women's Luncheon Melbourne is the major fundraising event for the charity. Held annually in October, the Luncheon brings together men and women from indigenous and non indigenous backgrounds to celebrate and socialise at a welcoming reconciliation event. See our website for more details.
