Story
This year on October 26th, members from MHN Design Union will be joining St John’s Community Services Roughtober fundraiser, and sleeping rough for one night in Darlinghurst to fundraise for the homeless.
There are approximately 116,000 homeless people in Australia, and as we learnt from the Rough Edges presentation, this number is higher in reality. The number of people experiencing homelessness in Australia aged 55 years and above has increased by 49% since 2006, and single women over 55 are the fastest growing group of people without a place to go.
As we design and document homes every day, the issue of homelessness is close to our hearts and we appreciate every contribution, big or small, to help make a difference for those who are needing it most.
Funds are used to support the Rough Edges cafe, the Urban Exposure education programme and the Community Assistance Partnership Programme (CAPP), which helps people move from emergency to sustainability.

St John's Community Services Limited (Rough Edges)
St John's Community Services Limited was established to fund and maintain a number of targeted services for the disadvantaged and marginalised in the Darlinghurst and Kings Cross area. Including:
Rough Edges Cafe - a place for the street community to have a coffee, enjoy a free meal and spend time together in a safe and welcoming environment
Banksia Women - a safe, judgement free space for women who have experienced domestic and family violence
St Johns Legal Service - we contract a solicitor to assist those needing help with free legal services and referrals
Community Assistance and Partnership Program (CAPP) - hospitality and practical assistance is provided by social workers for those seeking to exit the cycle of poverty
