Story

Hello booklovers,

We're asking you to support a bookshop walkathon. On Saturday 13th August, National Bookshop Day, YA authors and allies are getting together to raise money for a cause that's close to our hearts: the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

The Indigenous Literacy Foundation gifts new books and literacy resources to Indigenous kids and families in remote communities. They do this to level the playing field so that all Australian children have the same opportunities to develop a lifelong love of reading.

The ILF is a not-for-profit charity, funded entirely by donations.

Our challenge is to visit 11 Melbourne bookstores in one day, on foot! We estimate this to be 13km at least! At each store we will buy a book, and thereafter donate the price of that book to the cause. We'll keep everyone updated on social media, take lots of photos and share details of the OzYA books we buy along the way.

Some of the authors who are taking part include: Fiona Wood (Wildlife, Cloudwish), Nova Weetman (Frankie and Joely, The Secrets We Keep), Emily Gale (The Other Side of Summer, Steal My Sunshine), Shivaun Plozza (Frankie), Carolyn Gilpin (Facing Up), Gabrielle Wang (The Wishbird, Little Paradise), Sue Saliba (For The Forest of a Bird), and Danielle Binks (contributing editor of the forthcoming #LoveOzYA anthology, to be published by HarperCollins). They'll be joined by librarians, booksellers and YA readers from the #LoveOzYA community.

We'd appreciate any contribution you could make, big or small, to help us reach our target of $1,000 to buy books for Indigenous kids.

Donations made through this platform are secure and will be remitted directly through to my charity of choice.

Thank you so much for your support!

    Indigenous Literacy Foundation

Being able to read opens so many doors. But in very remote Indigenous communities, books are all too scarce and literacy levels are much lower than anywhere else in Australia. Our purpose is to make a difference to the lives of Indigenous families by not only gifting thousands of new culturally appropriate books - with a focus on early literacy and first language - but also by running programs to inspire the communities to tell and publish their own stories.
Please visit our website for more information about our programs.
