Patrick's Shepherd Centre

Story

Every year, one in 1000 Australian children is born with a significant hearing impairment (based on Ministerial Standing Committee on Hearing Annual Report 2007-2008).  That's one child almost every day.

With your support, The Shepherd Centre can help these children to learn how to listen and speak and fully participate in the hearing world.  More than 90% of graduates from The Shepherd Centre go on to attend a mainstream primary school, most with communication skills similar to typical hearing children.  However, this success comes at a significant cost - $15,246 for a child to attend one year of an intensive Early Intervention Program, over $10,000 of which we must cover through fundraising.

For those who know us, you would be aware that our youngest baby boy Patrick was born with a mild hearing loss due to Connexin 26 disorder.  This is a complex genetic disorder that leads to flawed copies of the gap junction beta 2 gene, which normally instructs a protein, Connexin 26.

Everybody has two copies of this gene, but if each birth parent has a flawed copy of the Connexin 26 gene, the baby may be born with a hearing loss.  The hearing loss occurs because the mutation is suspected of disrupting potassium flow in the inner ear.

Our Family have been going to The Shepherd Centre for almost a year now and they have been a great support to us as well as educating us to better teach and communicate to Patrick.  Without their help we would be lost.

Donate today and help The Shepherd Centre provide vital services to children who are deaf and hearing impaired and their families like us.

Every dollar helps give deaf children a voice.

Thank you.

The Shepherd Centre (NSW & ACT)

The Shepherd Centre helps children who are deaf or hearing impaired to learn how to listen and speak. Founded in 1970, with just five families, The Shepherd Centre now helps over 220 families in our five centres across NSW and the ACT. The organisation is recognised as a leader in the field of Auditory-Verbal Therapy, providing assistance to parents of children who are deaf and hearing impaired to develop spoken language, so that they can reach their full potential and be a fully contributing member of the community. The Shepherd Centre has assisted over 1,500 children and their families over the last 40 years. Ninety per cent of children graduate from The Shepherd Centre and enter mainstream schooling and the vast majority have age-appropriate speech and language. Support from the individuals and businesses in the community provides almost 75% of the much needed funds to provide these life-changing programs.
