Help Mrs. Khoai attend APAC 2011 and Contribue to Research on Autism Spectrum Disorders in Vietnam!
Story
NOTE: if you are donating from the U.S., for your address put the city you live in under "Suburb," and "Other" for state. Sorry for the confusion!
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) have become a growing problem in Vietnam. While its economy as a whole has made great strides in the past decade, these benefits have not been evenly distributed throughout the country, and the rapid increase in noncommunicable diseases have left health services and school systems with a shortage of resources, staff, and training necessary to effectively treat these complex disorders, especially in rural areas.
Thankfully, there are compassionate researchers, specialists, and educators, such as Mrs. Vo Thi Khoai, who have devoted their lives to ensuring that children with ASDs and their families who cannot adequately care for them will receive the help they need. Mrs. Khoai is the principal of the Gia Dinh Special School in Ho Chi Minh City and has been dedicated to helping children with special needs for 20 years. She recently used her invaluable experience to build the capacity of teachers, staff, and family members to care for children with autism at the Mai Anh School in the under-resourced area of Dalat, Vietnam. The collaborative efforts of Mrs. Khoai, CLAN, and the staff of Children's Hospital 1 (HCMC) have allowed families, caregivers, and teachers, to learn more effective strategies to help their children develop and better understand their complexities, resulting in significant improvements.
Currently, research on Autism Spectrum Disorders in Vietnam is noticeably lacking. This limits the abilities of Vietnamese pediatricians, specialists, and educators to effectively treat this growing issue. Mrs. Khoai has been invited to present her project on the Mai Anh School at the Asian Pacific Autism Conference (APAC), held in Perth, Australia, this September, 2011. This incredible opportunity would allow her to share her wealth of knowledge on effectively dealing with autism in the field of education, learn what current leaders in research of ASDs have done to improve treatment, and speak in depth with specialists and parents of children with autism from more developed areas. Her presentation could also encourage the implementation of similar projects in poorer areas. Unfortunately, with a limited salary in Vietnam, Mrs. Khoai is unable to pay for her trip to the conference.
Please help raise money to pay for Mrs. Khoai's flights, hotel accommodations, and a small stipend in order for her to attend and present at the APAC this September. This will help contribute to improved research on Autism Spectrum Disorders in Southeast Asia, increase awareness on the challenges of these disorders, and allow children without the same resources as us receive better treatment. Improving research in this area takes us one step closer to understanding possible ways of treating and preventing ASDs, while aiming to increase the quality of diagnostic and therapeutic services available for children in schools. Please give what you can to help Mrs. Khoai keep finding better ways to help these children! Your help is extremely appreciated!

CLAN (Caring & Living As Neighbours)
CLAN (Caring & Living As Neighbours) is a not-for-profit, Non Government Organisation, established in Australia in 2004. Our vision is to maximise quality of life for children living with chronic health conditions in resource-poor countries of the world. These children suffer significant, preventable and inequitable morbidity, mortality and disability, and CLAN believes this situation is at odds with the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of the Child. CLAN is currently working to help children who are living with Diabetes, Autism, Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH), Nephrotic Syndrome (NS), Duchenne Muscular Dystropy (DMD) and Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) amongst others, and we collaborate with partners in Vietnam, Indonesia, Pakistan and the Philippines.
