CONQUER THE CLIMB OF KILIMANJARO
CONQUER THE CLIMB OF KILIMANJARO
Story
Hi there!
In less than a month I will be attempting to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world with five other Aussies. While this will be the adventure of a life time and a tick off the bucket list we are also hiking for a good cause! We are raising awareness and money for my inspirational friend Narelle’s charity – Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC). This is the second year Narelle has run the trek to raise funds for the ward she has set up for premature babies in Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. While we are in Tanzania we will visit the ward and NIRA orphanage which KMC also supports to help out where we can. Any contribution you can make will be greatly appreciated :)
Donations made through this platform are secure and will be remitted directly through to my charity of choice.
Thanks so much for your support!
Kangaroo Mother Care (Global Development Group - J788N)
Kangaroo Mother Care is a Global Development Group (GDG) approved aid and development project (J788N). Based on the way that Kangaroos care for their joeys, Kangaroo Mother Care is a very simple concept that is helping to save babies in countries where medical equipment is a distant luxury. By placing the babies skin to skin on their mothers chest, this acts as a natural incubator and provides the babies with:
- Warmth
- Security
- Bonding
- Protection from infection
- Exclusive breastfeeding and increased weight gain
- Greatly improved morbidity and mortality rates
With one of the highest mortality rates in the world, the tiny babies born in Tanzania begin life with the odds stacked against them. Kangaroo Mother Care is giving hope to these babies and their mothers.
In a ward created in September 2012, over 300 of the country’s most vulnerable babies have made their way through the doors. Weighing between a tiny 750 to 1300 grams, these babies are amongst the smallest. With the support of Kangaroo Mother Care every one of these precious babies has survived and continues to thrive today. It truly is amazing! Mothers around Tanzania have heard of the successes of Kangaroo Mother Care and are now coming from far and wide to enter this ward which give them hope. There simply is not enough facilities to accommodate all these women and their babies.
