Saint Ignatius College Geelong | Refugee Week 2021
Saint Ignatius College Geelong | Refugee Week 2021
Story
Students and staff at Saint Ignatius College Geelong are engaging with Refugee Week (June 20th - June 26th) by participating in a range of activities and raising funds for Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS).
| Silent Protest |The Cage | Ration Challenge |
JRS serve, accompany and advocate for asylum seekers and refugees in Australia and around the world. They advocate strongly for change to Australia’s asylum and detention policies and inspire our staff and students to act for this injustice.
| Silent Protest |
On Monday 21st June students will wear a sign stating “I am in the Cage for those who are voiceless” and participate in a silent protest from morning homeroom until they get home to advocate for asylum seekers and refugees who are voiceless. Once home, students will watch and reflect on a film or documentary about the refugee crisis. Students are also digitally/virtually silent for the day.
|The Cage |
On Tuesday 22nd June students and staff will participate in ‘The Cage’. Beginning at recess, students and staff study, eat and eventually sleep overnight in ‘The Cage’, - a cyclone fenced off area at school, to raise awareness for and stand in solidarity with asylum seekers and refugees.
| Ration Challenge |
Throughout the week students will be undertaking a Ration Challenge, eating only from a specific menu, consisting of exactly the same food, in almost exactly the same quantities, that is distributed to Syrian refugees in urban refugee camps in Jordan.
The ration packs include: Rice: 420g, Lentils: 170g, Dried chickpeas: 85g, Tinned sardines/tuna (or tofu): 120g, Tinned kidney beans: 400g, Vegetable oil: 300ml, *400g of Flour and 1.5kg of Rice (represents food sourced through coupon schemes).
We hope these experience will give our students some insight into the challenges that asylum seekers and refugees face everyday and inspire our students to be people who welcome, advocate for, love and serve asylum seekers and refugees.
We are grateful for any support you may be able to offer!
