The world I live in:
Some months ago, I nervously walked through some big brown doors, into a house filled with curious, open eyes. Smothered with hugs before I could even introduce myself, I immediately fell in love. My heart exploded with every introduction, a bunch of names i thought i would never remember (a very overwhelming feeling) and so many happy smiling faces.
And here I am, 5 month in (after only initally going to stay for 6 weeks!) and they all have me wrapped around their little fingers. Mision Mexico is more than just a children refuge, they are right when they say they are a family. A small grassroots not-for-profit started by an Australian couple, Pam and Alan Skuse, or as the kids know them, Mama and Papa who work together, along side other very important Volunteers to care for up to 50 kids, who call each other brother and sister. It’s a family network spanning across the globe, who supports the kids through sponsorship to enable to them the delicacy of an education, of after school activities, of yummy food.
These kids have come from some of the hardest backgrounds imaginable. Abuse, neglect, abandonment, and extreme poverty, but every child manages to smile, laugh and be happy regardless of their pasts, and their hardships. They inspire you to be creative, to be strong and to live everyday.
Its not all sunshine and butterflies all the time, but really, what family ever is? But I can tell you one thing, its a heart shift like no other. A shift from knowing yourself, to really knowing yourself. A shift from being grateful, to really understanding how to be grateful. A shift from knowing love, to experiencing an unconditional love for a complete little stranger. To gaining a bigger, extended family than you could ever have dreamed of.
They receive no ongoing financial support from the government, so rely solely on the generosity of individuals and businesses such as yourself who are interested in making donations, holding fundraising events or becoming regular sponsors for these incredible little humans. Another way to get involved, get yourself on a plane to Mexico and volunteer. Not only will you have the privilege of hanging out with these legends, It’ll be an experience you will remember forever.
What I am looking to do:
There is a little group, I like to call the 3 monkeys or the 3 Musketeers. They are 3 boys aged all about 10, who share a bedroom, toys, they go to the same school, they share their dinners if another one is still hungry, and they pretty much spend every spare second with one another. Sometimes, in the morning when I wake them up for school, they will all be sleeping together in the one bed. Best friends.
They used to attend Ballet school together, however the opportunity no longer became available for them. They were devastated, as the only time they left our house all week was when they got to go to Ballet. Now it is a chance for them to do something outside the house, and meet new friends. I want to make this happen.
A Jui Jitsu school has just opened up across the road from our house - and its perfect. The 3 monkeys are always playing wrestling, and I would love to be able to support them to go to Jui Jitsu classes. I told them about this school the other day, and their eyes lit right up. "Do you think I could turn into the Hulk" said J. The other all visibility excited. "Can we go now" the other said.
I would love to send them now, this won't be possible without your help. It is $30 a month towards each child, and I am hoping to raise enough money to support all 3 of them for a whole year.
Any bit of help would be so appreciated, I want to see Mr J turn into the Hulk. If you could share this among your friends, who will hopefully share it among theirs, and so on, I am sure we can do it :)
Hopefully we see them on the mats soon.
