Story

The Dr Angela Worthington Motor Neurone Disease Research Fund

I have set up this page to help fulfil a dream of my friend and colleague, Dr Angela Worthington.

On February 11, Angela passed away from Motor Neurone Disease. Motor neurone disease (MND) causes rapidly progressive and severe weakness of the muscles that enable you to move, speak, breathe and swallow. In many cases it has a poor life expectancy and there are few treatments and no cure.

As with many diseases, they do not discriminate. Angela spent much of her life helping others as an exceptional heart specialist. This devastating degenerative disease of the nervous system meant that Angela quickly had to stop practicing and helping others. Angela was a loving wife and mother of two children. She comes from a large supportive family.

She is very missed by her colleagues and many patients for whom she provided warm and diligent care in Newcastle, NSW, Australia. Angela did her medical training at the University of Newcastle. As an undergraduate she tutored indigenous students. She participated in collaborative clinical research. As an inspired teacher and mentor, Angela has been a role model to many, particularly to women doctors.

She has always used her love of medical science to help others. Now it is time for us to help Angela make a difference to others in a different way. If we can raise $50,000, then a research grant can be established in Angela’s name.

It would warm Angela’s heart to know that your donation will go to assist research into MND, its causes and treatment so hopefully others do not need to experience what she and her family are going through.

Angela has selected the MND Research Institute of Australia to be the recipient of all donations made from this page for the following reasons:

All donations do go directly from this page to MNDRIA and are not handled by myself.

100% of donations made to MNDRIA go directly into research (any overheads of the research institute are covered by MND Australia).

MNDRIA have processes in place to review grant applications to ensure that any grants are going to the most appropriate recipients undertaking the highest quality research.

Donations over $2 are tax deductible

If you would like to learn more about MNDRIA and the great work that they do, please click here.

Please help me reach the goal of $100,000 so we can establish the Dr Angela Worthington MND Research Grant. Please note that if we can’t reach this total, then any donations will still go to MNDRIA and fund research into MND. However, it would be wonderful to know that we have raised enough to allow the grant to be named and the more we can raise, the longer the grant can remain in place.

Thank you,

Dr Susan Miles

Motor Neurone Disease Research Australia

MND Research Australia funds projects led by Australia’s leading MND researchers. By supporting MNDRA you are sparking new discoveries and ideas to defeat MND by funding new research projects that aim to understand the causes, develop effective treatments, and one day find a cure.

It is only with research that the future of MND will change. Together we will defeat MND.
